OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Peer Counselor is responsible for the provision of culturally informed, effective, quality peer services to clients at the Looking Glass PEER Shelter. This position assists with providing crisis intervention, maintaining a positive milieu and creating behavior management plans for youth who access services.

 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: Combination of work/lived experience, at least 6 months of worked experience if applicable. Prioritization given to individuals with lived experience within a marginalized community and/or experience with substance use treatment. Experience working with vulnerable populations and/or unhoused youth is a plus.

Availability: Wednesday-Saturday 2pm - 12am

Certifications: Preferred to have a valid Driver's License, have an acceptable driving record, and be insurable under the Agency's auto insurance policy

Ability to:

1.Commitment to Looking Glass Mission and Values.
2.Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of an integrated team.
3.Demonstrated ability to relate effectively with youth, parents, professionals and community.
4.Ability to use computer software (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) effectively for work tasks.
5.Ability to maintain confidentiality.

6.Good communication skills both orally and in writing.
7.Cultural sensitivity and experience working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds



Essential Functions:

  1. Provide care for shelter youth.
  2. Maintain a clear and positive milieu and implements program policies and procedures.
  3. Use of a person-centered approach to build relationships and trust, and to join with individuals and families through active listening and motivational interviewing.
  4. Assess individuals needs and develop goal/action plans; support in these goals to facilitate positive behavior change, and achieve goals.
  5. Educate clients on activities that promote healthy choices and prevention of potential risk factors.
  6. Acts as a positive role model.
  7. Document interventions and activities in accordance with Looking Glass standards.
  8. Attend weekly individual supervision as directed.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.
